The other lookout in Crater Lake National Park, Mount Scott, can also claim a superlative: it is the highest-elevation lookout remaining in Oregon. The first structure on Mount Scott was constructed in 1924 and was a standard pre-cut wood cupola building. During the last 15 years of its existence, the building was so loose that plotting the location of a fire on a windy day was impossible. It was replaced in 1952 by the current two-story modified L-4 which has a unique fold-up catwalk. Reached by a scenic 2.5-mile trail, it is now maintained for emergency use.
