Baughman Mountain Lookout was put into service by the Douglas Forest
Protective Association (Oregon) in 1925. The first tower was a crow's nest
atop a Douglas-fir tree. In 1934 a 10' round timber, trestle type, tower with
an L-4 cab was constructed. In 1953, a 50' treated timber tower with
an Amort style cab was erected on a point about one and a half miles to the
east. In 1979, the present 54' 6" steel tower with a 14'x14' flattop cab
with catwalk was assembled from the recycled Shivigny Mountain lookout,
which was dismantled in the fall 1978. The lookout is in active
service.
