Hunter Mountain has been a landmark in the Catskill Mountains of New York
since the region was settled in the late 1700s. The first lookout -- the
fourth in the state -- was a three-legged wooden tower with open platform
built in 1909. The present 60-toot steel Aermotor tower with metal 7’x7’ cab
was built by the NY Dept. of Environmental Conservation in 1917 and remained
in active service until 1988.
