If awesome views were the criteria for registration, the Puyallup Ridge
Lookout would be a contender for the head of the list. The evening alpen glow
from Mt. Rainier is spectacular. Built by the Washington Department of Natural
Resources in 1964, it may be the last new detection site established in the
state. Its service was short lived, having been phased out in the 1970s. The
30’ wooden tower supports a 14’ x 14’ live-in flattop cab with catwalk. Access
to the structure, which is in need of restoration, is by special road permit
through private timberlands (Plum Creek Timber Co. and Champion International)
