The site of a lookout in the northern Adirondacks since 1909, the present Saint Regis Mountain Fire Tower was constructed in 1918 by the state of New York and staffed for 81 years before being closed at the end of the 1990 fire season. The 35’ Aermotor LS-40 tower with 7’x7’ metal cab is readily visible from the Forest Interpretive Center at Paul Smiths College and is a popular hiking destination.  Further information can be viewed at the website of the Friends of St. Regis:  http://home.twcny.rr.com/friendsofstregis/stregis.htm.
