The Sterling Forest in the New York / New Jersey Highlands is much in the news
as federal, state and local governments deal with successive landowners on
plans for development and protection of one of the last great open spaces near
New York City. On top of it all sits Sterling Mountain Fire Tower. Built
by the State of New York in 1923, the 60’ Aermotor LS-40 tower with 7x7’ steel
cab has not been staffed for many years. In 1993 members of the NY/NJ
Highlands Group of the Forest Fire Lookout Association replaced the glass in
the tower. A 15’ x 25’ ground cabin remains in good condition.
The lookout was transferred to the Palisades Interstate Park System in 1998.
This fire tower is now under the control of the Bear Mountain State Park
Fire Control Bureau. The facility has been fully restored, and is open to
the public. The facility operates as an active forest fire detection site by
volunteers.
