The Bull Mountain Forest Fire Lookout Tower in Patrick County was originally a
wooden structure built in 1943 for the Virginia Forest Service (VDF). It was
replaced by the current 60’ Aermotor tower with 7’ x 7’ metal cab in 1949, and
a one-room ground residence cabin was added in 1950. In 1989 the site -- now
an emergency lookout -- was dedicated to Virginia Governor Gerald L. Baliles,
who grew up near the tower and visited it many times in his youth.
